It is hard to believe that summer is almost over! As we prepare to return to the daily routine of school and work, let us use these final days for self-reflection, respite and family fun. As you prepare to turn your children back over to our care, use these last days before school begins to give them extra love, time and attention. With the recent tragedies that we have witnessed across the nation, we are all reminded to hold our loved ones, especially our sweet children, a little closer, and hug them a little tighter. As adults, we know that during the busy school year, these simple but precious things can sometimes get overlooked due to the daily pressures of homework, deadlines, and extracurricular activities. Whether you are a new or returning family, this year will prove to be motivating, exciting and challenging.
Our theme for the 2022-2023 school year will be “It’s Grow Time!”. This growth centers around four key themes that will be the impetus for our instructional focus using G.R.O.W. as an acronym for G = Goal-Setting, R = Rigor, O = Out Teach, W = Whole-Child. The past two unprecedented school years brought many changes that tested the flexibility and durability of our school community, so it’s a perfect and appropriate time for us to focus on student growth. As we continue to live life through a major pandemic together, one that is changing our world, it is imperative that we make time to help our students learn that despite all that is circling about them, growth is still possible. My vision for the school year is to use the theme of “It’s Grow Time” as a sequel to our theme from last year, “Ready, Set, Grow,” to navigate the upcoming year successfully with a focus on individual student growth vs. achievement. In particular, what this theme implies for our school community is how we can rebound from the challenges caused by a major pandemic, address learning loss, and prepare students for 2022-23 and beyond. More detailed information will be shared as we work together to unpack this theme in our ongoing communications with our Vanderlyn community.
Our dedicated staff has been in preparation for the upcoming year, and we are excited to welcome your children back to school on August 8th. Our continued goal is to provide a safe, nurturing environment that supports students’ academic achievement and build character and self-esteem. Additionally, as your school leader, it is my goal to provide leadership and support that will inspire a culture of teaching and learning at the highest levels. With a spirit of collaboration between our dedicated staff and parents, we will continue to provide our students with the best possible educational experiences while taking decisive steps that will strongly impact their success. Our overall goal is to expose our students to a wide variety of optimal learning experiences designed to teach the “whole-child”. What a great year it’s going to be as we proudly proclaim, “It’s Grow Time”!
Again, it is an honor to serve the Vanderlyn School Community for the fifteenth year! I am proud of the legacy we have created and remain committed to making sure that Vanderlyn remains high on the list as one of the best schools in Georgia. I look forward to a successful partnership and another great school year!
